Space science and astronomy p2 Flashcards
What is mass measured in?
Kilograms [kg.]
What is mass?
The amount of matter an object contains.
What is matter?
Sub-atomic particles and anything made from them.
What direction does the gravitational force pull towards?
The centre of any object.
What is weight?
The force acting on an object due to the pull of gravity from a massive object.
What is gravitational field strength?
Force per unit mass. Measured in newtons per kg.
What is a year?
The time taken for a planet to make one orbit of its star.
How often does the Earth go round the Sun?
In one Earth year.
What are seasons?
One of the four times of the year. [Winter, spring, summer or autumn].
What is a day?
The time taken for a planet to turn once on its axis.
Why does the Sun appear to move through the sky in one day?
Because the Earth is spinning on its axis.
What is the Earth’s axis?
The imaginary line through the centre of the Earth between the South and North poles about which the Earth rotates.
