Rocks Flashcards
What are the Earth’s main layers?
The Earth’s main layers are:
crust
mantle
core
What is the atmosphere?
The layer of gases that surround the Earth.
Are rocks solid at room temperature?
Yes
What are porous rocks?
Rocks that absorb water.
What are sedimentary rocks?
Rocks that are formed through the deposition of sediments.
What are sediments?
Small fragments of rock and soil.
What is compaction?
When the weight of the sediments on top squashes the sediments at the bottom.
What is cementation?
When the water is squeezed out from between the pieces of rock and crystals of different salts form. The crystals then stick the pieces of rock together.
How many years does it take for sedimentary rocks to form?
millions
What are metamorphic rocks?
These are rocks that are formed from other rocks that are changed because of heat or pressure.
What is pressure?
Pressure is force exerted over an area.
