Space Flashcards
How does the earth travel around the sun?
In an elliptical revolution
What is a satellite?
Any object that orbits a planet. Moon is natural satellite
Solar eclipse?
Sun moon earth
Lunar eclipse?
Sun earth moon
Star
Body if electrically charged gas or plasma that emits energy from nuclear reactions from core
Sunspot
Region of the surface of sun that’s cooler than surrounding areas indicating a strong magnetic field, slowing down convection
Solar prominences
Large, low energy, curved, bright stream of particles that form a loop shaped by sun’s magnetic field
Solar flare
High energy massive explosion at the surface of the sun. Sudden release of magnetic energy flings hot plasma into space
Solar wind
Tremendous amount of energy at the sun’s surface produces a constant flow of particles streaming out of its surface in all directions.
Aurora borealis
Natural light displace in the sky. Formed by solar wind particles getting trapped in the earth’s magnetic field and swept towards the poles
Solar system
A star and all of the other celestial objects held by sun’s gravity and orbit around it
Nebula
Cloud of dust and gases in space that is essential for star formation
Nebular theory
After sun forms, solar wind blows against nebula from which it formed, pushing gas and dust away from sun.
Leftover gas continues to spin, creating thin disk around new star
Small bodies begin to form in the disk, forming planets, moons, asteroids
Planet
Astronomical body that orbits one or more stars and is capable of forming into spherical shape with its own gravitational force
Rocky inner planets
Mercury venus earth mars
