Meiosis Flashcards
Meiosis stages
Interphase
1st division - chromosomes pair up and only one goes to each daughter cell (half number if parent)
2nd division - daughter cell each divides without duplicating chromosomes
Results in four identical daughter cells with only half of the chromosomes of parent cell.
Fertilization
Joining of two gametes. Creates single new cell (w full set of chromosomes) called zygote
Zygote divides via mitosis forming multicellular life form called an embryo
Hermaphrodite
Animals that can produce both male and female gametes. Usually mate with own species but when needed members can fertilize themselves
Plant reproductive organ
Flower
Male gametes in plants
Pollen found on stamen
Female gametes
Ovules found in pistil
Pollination
Occurs when pollen transfers from anther of stamen to stigma of pistil
Cross pollination
Pollen of one plant carries to stigma of another via wind or water
Self pollination
Pollination occurring on one plant
Advantage and disadvantages of sexual reproduction
A - Offspring show variation which helps species in inconstant environment survive
D - Embryo must be protected and nurtured during development; limited number of offsprings can be produced
