Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction involving one parent
Clone
Identical copies of parent
Advantages and disadvantages to asexual reproduction
Advantage: population grows quickly, good for environments that don’t change much
Disadvantage: all offspring are identical. Any negative factors that effect parent effect offspring
Binary Fission
Single celled organisms divide into two identical daughter cells that are clones of parent
Amoeba
Budding
Parent produces small bud or miniature clone that detatch and become separate individuals
Coral
Parthenogenesis
Unfertilized haploid eggs mature into new organisms
Komodo dragon
Spore
Haploid cells that develop into new organisms. Cannot be fertilized to produce offspring
Ferns
Vegetative reproduction
Reproduction of offspring by plants that dont involve formation of seeds.
Strawberry plants grow modified stems
Fragmentation
New individuals former from piece of existing organism
Starfish
Grafting
One part of plant is joined with another plant. Two plants heal together forming one plant but maintain own characteristics.
Trees
Plant tissue cultures
Plant cells placed in petri dish or bottle containing nutrients and other chemicals and grow into new individuals. Seedlings, planted into soil
