What are the functions of the SP?
- governs transformation and transportation
- controls blood (keeps blood IN the vessels)
- raising of Qi to LU and HT
- controls the muscles and 4 limbs
- foundation of Post- natal existence or Root of Post-Heaven Qi
causes: poor nutrition, overthinking, prolonged exposure to dampness, chronic dz
sx: poor appetite (especially in the morning), abdominal distension (
SP Qi Deficiency
causes: same as SP Qi Def, excessive consumption of cold herbs
sx: edema, loose stools (with undigested food), cold limbs, sallow/bright-white complexion, chilliness, plus SP Qi Def sx
tongue: pale and swollen; white, smooth/wet coat
pulse: weak and deep, often slow
SP Yang Deficiency
causes: same as SP Qi Def, standing for prolonged periods
sx: bearing down sensation in abdomen, prolapse of any organ, frequent and urgency of urination, dull-pale complexion, plus SP Qi Def sx
tongue: pale
pulses: weak and thin
SP Qi Sinking
causes: same as SP QI Def
sx: bloody stool, hematuria, menorrhagia/metrorrhagia, blood spots under the tongue, plus SP Qi Def sx
tongue: pale
pulses: weak and thready
SP Failing to Control Blood
causes: excessive consumption of raw and cold food, wading in water, being caught in the rain, residing in a damp environment
sx: heaviness of head and body, stickiness of mouth, loose/sticky stools, white vaginal discharge, cloudy, clear urine, no thirst
Cold-Damp Invading the SP
generally short lived
causes: excessive consumption of sweet and greasy food, alcohol
sx: fullness and distention in epigastrium and abdomen, hunger with no desire to eat, thirst with no desire to drink, loose stools with offensive odour and stickiness, scant-dark yellow urine
pulse: rapid and slippery
