KWV stand for Ko-operatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging van Zud-Afrika.
It’s original purpose was to set minimum prices for grapes, determine areas of production, and establish production limits
What was another problem for South African Wineries faced before the 1990s?
Quality was not really encouraged by the industry, this is due in large part to the quotas that were established by the KWV.

It is another word for grape varietal.
There are currently 90 approved for use irrespective of region
What are the labeling rules for South African wine?
- A wine must contain 85% of a varietal for single varietal wine
- Blends are allowed if the grapes are vinified separately and each listed grape makes up min. 20% of the blend.
- Min 85% of the grapes must come from the listed vintage if there is one
- If an area of production is listed on the label then 100% of the grapes must come from that region

- Geographical Unit (largest)

What are the requirements for single vineyard designation in South Africa?
- The wine must be sourced solely from that vineyard
- The vineyard must be appropriately registered
- The vineyard must be smaller than 6 ha/14.5 acre
What are the requirements for Estate Wines in South Africa?
- Wines must be produced from contiguous parcels of vineyard land
- The wines must also be vinified and bottled at a single property
what is the IPW, and what does it do?
The Integrated Protection of Wine Scheme.
It is a voluntary means of certification for W.O. producers who wish to comply with sustainable environmental standards
