Slavery
King Cotton made up south’s economy. They fought to protect it while north fought against it.
Agrarian vs Industrialising
North focused on industry while South on farming. Massachusetts 1860 produced more manufactured goods than all of confederate states.
Tariffs
South fought for free trade but north wanted to tax exports. Farmer, inevitably most of the profits of king cotton ended up in Yankee pockets
Ideology
Southern states were very conservative and didn’t agree with some northern actions
Federal intervention
South didn’t like the idea of federal intervention from the north as they didn’t think it would benefit their state
States rights
South wanted to protect its individual states rights but the North saw it as stubborn and federal being better.
Education
South had 3x more the illiterate whites than North. Less education splits political and social ideology.
Railway
North was slightly more developed, having 2x more railway than the south.
Radical North
South saw movements like temperance and abolition to be radical and dangerous.
Immigration
Racist south so north as all immigrants. 1/30 people in North were foreign born.
