Source Revision: Northern Victory/Southern Defeat Flashcards
Historians
- Blight, you can argue Grant won the war but he thinks too much is made of this
- Potter, if they swapped Presidents the Confederate could’ve won
Lack of Morale
South lost morale after significant loss of territory, loss of life, Sherman at Atlanta, impact on economy
Grant
Able to utilise Union numbers to overwhelm South, claiming victories like Vicksburg and perhaps winning war.
Emancipation Proclamation
Added more numbers for Union in African Americans. Also added sense of morale and fighting for freedom.
International Recognition
Passing emancipation and the south’s Deep South diplomats the North stopped GB and therefore southern supplies
Hyper inflation
Davis decisions to print more money for resources and loans sent South into hyper inflation and poverty. End of war 9000%. Starvation and no longer afford war.
Cotton embargo
Aimed to force British involvement but failed, essentially cutting off their own resources and funding from the start.
Industry
Northern focus on industry during antebellum meant they were more prepared for war. 1860: 90% of nation’s manufacturing power. Stronger self sufficiency and supply lines.
States rights
Individual states rights interfered with Davis’s overall leadership. States didn’t leave Union to be controlled by Confederacy meant arguments and an ineffective government strategy.
Presidents
Lincoln clear communication and orders. Davis was petty and argumentative. Went through 5 secretaries of war in 4 years
Northern Strategy
Anaconda plan, established earlier and properly adopted later, set Union up for long term victory which was a better plan than the South focusing on Richmond.
