Bleeding Kansas
1856 people rushing into Kansas for the popular sovereignty vote led to violence and an unfair vote.
Collapse of the Whigs
The separation of the anti slavery and pro slavery Whigs led to their collapse after major disagreements over the act.
Expansion of slavery
Northerners feared that this was the start of the expansion of slavery again. Wanted to let slavery naturally die out in south.
Sectional tension
North was outraged and parties were split down sectional lines as both fought over the act and its consequences.
Slave power conspiracy
North saw it as an act of slave power conspiracy becoming more prevalent and attacking.
Republicans
After the act weakened political parties and collapsed the Whigs - left room for the rise of an all northern anti slavery party.
Democrats split
Democrats also started to split down sectional lines. Buchanan lost Douglas’s support and other northern democrats after trying to appease southern.
1820 Compromise
The Missouri compromise was overruled as popular sovereignty replaced the 36-30 latitude line.
Sack of Lawrence
1856 as pro slavery supporters raided Kansas town. Destroyed abolition printing presses and town.
John Brown’s Raid
1856 John Brown and sons went to Potawattomie Creek where pro slavery supporters were staying and brutally killed 5.
