- Avery Crane, secession and war was the result of the irresponsible actions of the Abolitionists.
- Beard, southern refusal to become economically subservient to the north.
Slavery
The south seceded to protect slavery as it was a part of society and economy.
Economy
South didn’t want to become subjected to Northern tariffs, banking and export rules due to prominence of cotton in south.
Lincolns Election
Lincoln won presidency despite not receive in a single southern vote. They felt that the president no longer represented both sides.
Breakdown of the two party system
Neither the republicans nor the democrats were a party that truly supported the south. They did not feel represented anymore.
States Rights
The South seceded in order to protect their individual states rights from northern interference.
Failure of Compromise
Many attempts from Buchanan and others to compromise failed. Closest was the Crittaden proposals but Republicans rejected it as it was too generous to slavery.
Republican Party
A northern party developed and in power that favoured in most cases against the south. South feared the consequences of them in power.
Differences in Society
Throughout antebellum period they were divided in society. On slavery, education, immigration, industry. They didn’t get along and South seceded to focus on own needs.
Abolitionists
Abolitionists like John Brown brought increased pressure and danger to South over the issue of slavery.
