SOUND PERCEPTION -- The Organ of Corti--The Hearing Organ Flashcards
Vibrates in respond to sound waves.
Basilar membrane
Made of epithelium, collagen and
elastic fibers.
Basilar membrane-
Neurons found in basilar membrane; Have special sensory microvilli (stereocilia) sticking out of their tops; Bending of microvilli produces action potentials that the
temporal lobe of cerebrum interprets as sounds (Inner Hair Cells).
Hair cells
Produce the APs that the cerebrum interprets/turns into sounds.
Inner Hair Cells
Form the Cochlear Amplifier which “tunes” the inner hair cells or allows them to precisely distinguish between different sound pitches.
Outer Hair Cells
What are the 2 types of hair cells and how many rows of hair are in each?
Inner Hair Cells—1 Row
Outer Hair Cells—3 Rows
—Stiff, gel-like roof that the stereocilia of hair cells are embedded in
Tectorial membrane
Made of neurons that synapse with the inner hair cells; Carries APs to areas of brainstem for processing and eventually to auditory cortex of temporal lobe.
Cochlear nerve
Ototoxic drugs damage which hair cells causing hearing loss.
