change is constant
change is always happening, the therapist assumes the client has made progress
language and meaning
The language clients use is mirrored and important in understanding the Client’s model of the world. Words hold different meaning for each individual
hope
Therapist holds hope always and models belief in the client’s ability to solve his own problem even when the client does not believe it to be possible
three types of levels of committment to treatment

- complainant - comes with a complaint and believes therapy will help
- customer - has a complaint and desire to do something about i
formula first session task
The client is asked what they DO NOT want to change as a result of coming to therapy. this focuses client to look at strengths and continue the solution
The Miracle question
a hypothetical question used to assess for resources and preferred future, goal is to find “exceptions”
exception questions
solution focused is heavily questions based and will lead to focusing on exceptions, this loosens up the person’s grip on the problem…all questions are focused outside of the problem
scaling questions
used to access client perception about a desired feeling and to identify more resources
compliments
