- excitement phase,
- plateau phase (after arousal, not yet orgasm),
- orgasm
- resolution phase (after orgasm)
Sensate Focus
(Masters & Johnson)
This intervention allows couples to ease into sex and overcome inhibition by becoming more familiar with one another’s bodies through a series of touch, identifying pleasure responses and connecting mind and body
Squeeze Technique
(Masters and Johnson)
Used to work through pre-ejaculation. prior to the male reaching orgasm, the partner squeeze the penis to disrupt the orgasmic process
What did HELEN SINGER KAPLAN develop/contribute to sex therapy?
- developed Psychosexual Therapy which combines Master and John behavorial therapy and object-relations theory,
- emphasis on sexual desire;
stop-start technique
(Kaplan)
used to treat pre-ejactulatio in men. preferred source of stimulation would occur until male reaches preomnitory sensations, then stimulation stops. process is repeated, allowing the male to build a greater tolerance for pleasure as well as better control over his body. This technique builds confidence by extending the duration of sexual interaction
triphasic sexual response
(Kaplan)
emphasized the interacitonal terms of sexual desire, excitment, and organsm to better explain sexual intercourse
bridge maneuver
(Kaplan)
the bridge maneuver directs manual stimulation of the female in an effort to produce orgasm. This would gradually decrease as treatment proresses in gradual movement towar the partner ultimately fulfilling that role
What did DAVID SCHNARCH contribute to Sex Therapy?
Schnarch combined object-relations theory with interenrational theories to create an approach that identifies sexual life as a means of storytelling that shares one’s story with his or her partner through intercourse.
Goals of Schnarch Sex Therapy?
- includes differentiation of each partner and
- disregards concepts of dysfunction - attributing sexual struggles reflecting the degree to which partners have effectively differentiated.
What did LESLIE AND JOSEPH LOPICCOLO contribute to Sex Therapy?
focused on development of techniques to treat physiological sexual dysfuntion
directed masterbation training:
(LoPicollo)
to treat anorgasmic women, this technique helps women to touch herself, and then her partner in varrious ways to trigger orgasm
What is the difference between a sexual dysfunction and a sexual disorder?
- dysfunction: a PHYSIOLOGICAL arousal or performance problem. *This requires a MEDICAL REFERRAL
- disorder: a PSYCHOLOGICAL arousal or performance problem. *this can be treated by a sex therapist
spectatoring?
when sexually active, one focuses all mental attention on his or her own sexual bxs (or quality of sexual bxs). This can be a result of performance anxiety or result in experiencing performance anxiety
Coital Alignment Technique (CAT)
an intervention used to increase mutual stimulation through full body contact (male learns to position and maneuver on top of the woman)
