Solubility Flashcards
What is a solvent?
A liquid that dissolves a solid
What is a solute?
A solid that dissolves in a liquid
What is a solution?
A mixture of a solid dissolved in a liquid
What is solubility?
Solubility is a measure of the mass of a solute that saturates of 100g of solvent at a given temperature, units are g/100g solvent.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution which contains as much of a dissolved solute that will dissolve in 100g of solvent at a given temperature, units are g/ 100g solvent
What factors affect solubility?
Heat
Stirring
Volume of solvent
Amount of solute
How does temperature affect the solubility of gasses
Gases become less soluble at higher temperatures
What equation allows one to determine the solubility of a solid
Solubility (g/100g of water) = mass of solute x 100

mass of solvent
What is a solubility curve?
A solubility curve is a graph of solubility against temperature
How should you label the axis of a solubility curve?
Y axis: Solubility (g/100g solvent)
X axis Temperature (*C)
What should you be able to do with a solubility curve?
Read off the maximum mass that dissolves at a given temperature
Find what temperature a certain amount of solute dissolves at.
Calculate the mass that would crystallise out if saturated solution cooled between two temps.
