Q

What is ionic bonding?

A

Occurs between metals and non metals
Def: Ionic bonding is the attraction between oppositely charged ions.
Some atom gives one or more of its atoms to another, so they both have full outer shells.

Learn dot and cross diagram for this process
(One atoms electrons represented as X while the other as O. Draw an arrow pointing to the atoms after they have exchanged electrons. Draw these in brackets, and write their charge and label them.)

Q

What is covalent bonding?

A

Occurs between two non metals.
The two atoms share some of their electrons, forming a really strong bond and filling each other’s outer shell.

Q

What is a single covalent bond?
What is a double covalent bond?

A

Single - atoms share one pair of electrons
Double - atoms share two pairs of 2 pairs of electrons

Etc

Q

What is an alloy?
Why are they harder than pure metals?

A

A mixture of two or more elements, with at least one being a metal.

They are harder as they are made of different sized atoms, so the lattice becomes less regular and makes it harder for the layers to slide over each other and are therefore less malleable and ductile.
