Solid state storage Flashcards
What are solid state storage’s made of?
Flash memory
How is each bit stored on a solid state storage?
In a semi conductor chip
How is data accessed on a solid state storage?
Data is accessed randomly. This means that if there is a piece of information in the middle of all the data, you do not have to go through all of the data just to get to the middle, this is because there are no moving parts.
What is a feature of SSD?
- Robust, no moving parts
- Limited number of read/write , after a certain number of read-writes they will stop working.
What are the characteristics of SSD?
- Fast read/write speeds
- High costs
- Have a good capacity but not as good as magnetic or optical
- Reliable
A home computer user’s solid state drive (SSD) has failed. They are trying to find out why this has happened, but the only thing that they have done differently recently is use virtual memory. Why has their SSD failed?
Using their SSD as virtual memory caused the pages to be continuously written and read, which broke the read/write cycle limit.
