Soft Tissue Tumours Flashcards
What suggests a benign lesion?
smaller size, fluctuation in size, cystic lesions, well defined lesions and fluid filled ones
What suggests a malignant tumour?
> 5cm, rapid growth, solid lesion, ill-defined, irregular, associated lymphadenopathy and systemic upset
Most common benign tumour?
Lipoma
What is a giant cell tumour of tendon sheath?
small, firm swelling found on the flexor tendon sheath of finger (Benign)
Symptoms of a giant cell tumour of tendon sheath
pain sometimes dependent on how far it has eroded into the bone
What do Giant cell tumours (oTS) look like?
Macroscopically: pigmented lesion
histologically contain multinucleated giant cells and haemosiderin
What is Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis?
similar lesion to a giant cell tumour of tendon sheath in a synovial joint causing pain and effusions
What is an angiosarcoma?
a malignant tumour of the blood vessels
What is a fibrosarcoma?
malignant tumour of fibrous tissue
What is a liposarcoma?
malignant tumour from fat
What is a rhabdomyosarcoma?
malignant tumour of skeletal muscle
What is a synovialsarcoma?
malignant tumour of the synovial joints and tendons
most common age to get a sarcoma?
50-70
What is a ganglion cyst and where does it occur?
occurs around a synovial joint or a synovial tendon sheath and are well defined lesion and is readily trans illuminate
what causes a ganglion cyst?
is due to a herniation or out-pouching of a weak portion of a joint capsule or tendon sheath
