What is Osteomalacia?
Qualitative defect of bone due to deficient mineralisation of osteoid due to low calcium and phosphate
What is rickets?
Osteomalacia in children
What are the causes?
Lack of calcium or vitamin D, no sunlight, hypophosphatemia, long term anti-convulsants and chronic kidney disease
What are the symptoms?
bone pain, deformities from soft bones, hypocalcaemia and pseudofractures
What are the symptoms of hypocalcaemia?
paraesthesiae, muscle cramps, irritability, fatigue, seizures, brittle nails
Where do you often see pseudo fractures?
pubic rami, proximal femora, ulna and ribs
What markers would you see biochemically?
low calcium, low serum phosphate and raised serum alkaline phosphate
How would you treat?
vitamin D and calcium supplements
