Hyperparathyroidism, Renal dystrophy and Paget's Disease Flashcards
What is hyperparathyroidism?
Overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in increased levels of PTH
What are the primary causes of hyperparathyroidism?
benign adenoma, hyperplasia or a malignant neoplasia
What does hyperparathyroidism result in?
hypercalcaemia
What biochemical signs would you see in hyperparathyroidism?
increased serum PTH, increased calcium, normal or low phosphate
What causes secondary hyperparathyroidism?
Physiological, due to a deficiency of vitamin D or CKD
What causes tertiary hyperparathyroidism?
Having secondary hyperparathyroidism and an adenoma
What is renal dystrophy?
bone changes due to CKD
What causes renal dystrophy?
reduced phosphate excretion or inactive activation of vitamin D
What happens due to renal dystrophy?
hyperparathyroidism and subsequent Osteomalacia, sclerosis of bone and calcification of soft tissue
Is Paget’s disease acute or chronic?
Chronic
What happens in Paget’s disease?
thickened, brittle and misshapen bones
How many bones does Paget’s disease affect?
one or a few bones
What percentage of 55+ people are affected by Paget’s disease?
4%
What percentage of 80+ people are affected by Paget’s disease?
10%
What causes Paget’s disease
viral infection, genetic defects
