What are the two layers of the skin?
Dermis and epidermis
What does skin do for the body?
Protects tissue from injury
Aids in temperature regulation
Prevents excessive loss of water
Acts as a sense organ
What determines the darkness of a persons skin tone?
The amount of melanin present
What is hemostasis?
Cessation of bleeding
Describe capillary bleeding.
Dark red, oozing from the wound slowly but steadily.
Describe venous bleeding.
Darker than arterial and flows steadily.
Describe arterial bleeding.
Characteristically brighter red and spurts with the pulse.
What is adipose?
Fat tissue
What are chemotactic factors?
The factors that cause cells to migrate to an area
What is compartment syndrome?
A condition that develops when edema and swelling result in increased pressure within soft tissues, compromising circulation and possibly resulting in tissue necrosis.
What is crush syndrome?
Significant metabolic derangement that can lead to renal failure and death. It develops when crushed extremities or other body parts remain trapped for prolonged periods.
What is erythema?
Reddening of the skin
What is a pedicle?
A narrow strip of tissue by which an avulsed piece of tissue remains connected to the body
