Sodium potassium pump Flashcards
1
Q
Explain the sodium potassium pump
A
Sodium potassium pump, uses energy from ATP to pump 3 sodium ions out of epithelial cell into blood stream and 2 potassium ions from blood stream into cell (active transport)
The concentration of sodium ions inside the epithelial cell decreases
Sodium ions from the lumen of the intestine diffuse into the epithelial cell down their concentration gradient through a cotransport protein channel (facilitated diffusion)
The cotransport protein fits a glucose molecule in so glucose is cotransported into the epithelial cell
Glucose can now move from the epithelial cell, into the blood stream by facilitated diffusion through a glucose channel
