Franklin E. Frazier became the 1st African American president of the American Sociological Association and published a seminal book : Black Bourgeoisie . This analyzed the socioeconomic mobility of the 1940 and 1950 families . This rare system extended social rewards on the basis of one’s merits such as education , performance and career pursuit.
Meritocracy
One’s social preference of those of commonly shared belief , value , and religion.
Homily
The status of a person’s educational attainment and income level.
Achieved Status
The status OUTSIDE the individual’s control : Genetics , physical disabilities , Race , and gender . These factors are beyond our control .
Ascribed Status
The idea that society is constructed by us and our ancestors ( atavistic kin) . Such behavioral attributes registered as habits. There is an intergenerational patterns of habits that define who we are.
Habitualization
The implantation of a convention or norm into the society . This represents an act of instilling its normative and conventional functions . Massachusetts was the 1st Colonial State to institutionalize Racial Slavery in 1641. Around 1780 , its State Constitution declared slavery as illegal . The State Supreme Court upheld the ruling of constitutional interpretation of slavery in 1783 thus freeing the Massachusetts slaves.
Institutionalization
Our reflection of how we think we appear to others.

Roles
An array of roles attached to a particular status
Role sets
A situation when one or more of an individual’s role clash
Role Conflict
The externalized expression of the role
Role Performance
Stress that occurs when too much is required from 1 role.
Role strain
An idea that becomes true when acted upon .
Self fulfilling prophecy
The responsibilities and benefits that a person experiences according to his or her rank and role in the society.
Status
How a subjective reality can drive events to develop in accordance with that reality despite being originally unsupported by objective reality.
