Case study
in depth analysis of a single event, situation, or individual
Content analysis
a systematic approach to record and value information gleaned from secondary data
Ethnography
going into a setting to observe people in their natural environment
Field research
gathering data from a natural environment without doing a lab experiment or a survey
Hawthorne effect
when study subjects behave in a certain manner due to their awareness of being observed by a researcher
Interpretive framework
research approach that seeks in depth understanding of a topic of subject through observation or interaction; not based on testing
Literature Review
a scholarly research step that entails identifying and studying all existing studies on a topic to create a basis for new research
Operational definitions
specific explanations of abstract concepts that a researcher plans to study
Participant Observation
when a researcher immerses themselves in a group or social setting in order to make observations from an insider perspective
Research Process
- Research question
- Literature review (situate research within larger context)
- Create hypothesis
- Do the Study (either quantitative or qualitative)
Interviews
one on one conversation between researcher and subject, can be fully structures, semi structured, or non structured
Ethics
Prevents psychological/physical harm to subjects
Bias
allowing ones own opinions to impact the results of their research in favor of their opinion
Bias can be minimized by
peer review, using multiple sources, acknowledging and knowing what your own biases are
