Non-material Culture
ideas, beliefs, values, names
Material Culture
tangible objects that have non-material meaning
Beliefs are
ideas a culture holds to be true
Values are
the standards a culture decides are good
Norms
rules on how people should behave
Formal Norms
explicitly written, strictly enforced rules such as laws
Informal Norms
unwritten rules that are generally accepted by members of a culture
Mores
norms guided by cultural values on what is morally correct
Folkways
behavior is different depending on the context
Symbols
objects, actions, or words that help people understand the world, bridge the gap between material and non-material
Language
communication through symbols that are used to share culture
Ethnocentric Lens
viewing another culture based on the standards of your own culture
Cultural Relativism
evaluating another culture with it as its own standard
High Culture
cultural patterns that the highest class experiences
Popular Culture
cultural patterns that the mainstream class experiences
Sub Culture
a smaller group that accepts most if not all of the ideals of the larger society, but still identifies with a smaller group
Counterculture
subculture that completely rejects larger society
Cultural Lag
when the culture’s adoption of an innovation is behind
Globalization
spreading culture worldwide through global markets, travel, communication, etc.
