socialization (5)
- is the lifelong process of social interaction through which individuals acquire a self identity and the physical, intellectual and social skills for survival in society
- is essential for individual survival and human development
- is essential for the survival and stability of society
- individuals are socialized to support the existing social structure by passing on cultural content from one generation to the next
- the ways in which people learn beliefs, values and rules of behavior is similar in many countries/cultures but the content differs
human development (6)
- to be human is to be conscious of ourselves as unique individuals with unique personalities, identities, and relationships with others
- at birth we are totally dependent on others. babies have the potential to develop human characteristics if we are exposed to the socialization process
- involves biology, society, personal experience: nature (genetics, heredity) vs nurture (social environment)
- heredity provides the basic material from which other people help to mold or human traits
- biological and emotional needs are related. if needs are met: children thrive and see the world as a safe place, if emotionally rejected: children live with suspicion, fear, and may not thrive in the world
social isolation
-children need social contact to develop properly
harlow’s study of rhesus monkeys (3)
- remove monkeys from their mothers, isolated them in cages
- had two wire mothers in the cages one had a bottle (met the biological need for food) other was covered in a soft cloth (met emotional needs)
- monkeys preferred the cloth mother, only left her to eat deprived of social contact, never learn to relate to other monkeys

- was kept in an attic like room for six years. when found cannot talk, walk, or feed herself
2) genie (1970)
- was 13 years old when found locked in the bedroom
- unsocialized, cannot stand erect, not toilet trained, drilled continuously, could not chew solid food, had the weight and appearance of a 6 to 7-year-old
- had psychological traits associated with neglect
- extensive therapy was done to socialize her with limited success
child abuse (2)
- is the violence, mistreatment or neglect as a child may experience while in the care of someone they trust or depend on
ex) physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, exploitation
neglect
not meeting a child’s needs basic needs (emotional warmth and security, food, shelter, healthcare, education)
child abuse is linked to the: (2)
- power imbalance between child and adult, because child is dependent on adult and has a little power to change their circumstances
- inequalities in society (ex: poverty)
