- occurs when we assume a new status of our own free will
- ex) become a student, employee, retiree

- occurs against a persons wishes and usually takes place in a “total institution”
- removed from family and friends
- required to obey rigid rules and conform to a new social environment
- take away identity, build a compliant person using rewards and punishments
- goal is to reform a person so they will conform to society’s starts of behaviour after release

A
- a place where people are isolated from society for a set period of time and are under the control of the officials no run the institution
- ex) prison, military boot camp, psychiatric hospital, residential school
