1) folkways=informal norms or everyday custom that may be violated without serious consequences in a particular society
- ex: holding the door, wearing deodorant
2) mores=strongly held norms with moral and ethical considerations. if violated, there are serious consequences in a particular culture. a taboo is a more, violation is extremely offensive
- ex: incest taboo
3) laws=formal, standardized norms that have been enacted by legislatures and are enforced by formal sanctions
- civil law deals with disputes among persons or groups
- criminal law deals with public safety and well-being
