Jean Piaget Flashcards
cognitive theorists are interested in:
-how people obtain, process, and use information-that is, in how we think
cognitive development relates to
-changes over time in how we think
in each stage of cognitive development, children’s activities are governed by their:
-perception of the world around them
stages are organized around: (2)
- specific tasks that, when bastard, but lead to the acquisition of new mental capacities, which then serve as the basis for the next level of development
- children must go through each stage and sequence before moving onto the next one
stage one: sensorimotor stage (3)
- birth to 2
- children understand the world through sensory contact and immediate action they cannot engage in symbolic thought or use language
- object permanence is it to be like fish and the objects continue to exist even when the items are placed out of their sight
stage two: preoperational stage
- 2-7
- children use words of mental symbols into for mental images but are limited in their ability to use logic
stage three: concrete operational (2)
- 7-11
- children think in terms of tangible objects an actual events
stage four: formal operational stage (2)
- 12-through adolescence
- adolescents have the potential to engage in highly abstract thought and understand places, things and events they have never seen
what do these stages of cognitive development provide insight to?
-into children’s logical thinking, and how they learn to understand the world: first being totally influenced by others (parents) to later thinking and acting based on their own judgments about behavior
