socialist feminism , how to achieve equality Flashcards
socialist feminists focused on how
capitalism and socialism were closely linked
socialist feminists believed that
a socialist revolution was necessary for gender oppression to be removed
their vision of a society free of gendered oppression built on
socialist visions of communal living and collectivism
both rowbotham and Gilman advocated for
the domestic labour to be communal
later socialist feminisms argued that
the removal of capitalism alone was sufficient to achieve full gender equality
argued that societal attitudes and gender relations in the private sphere
needed to be tackled as well as capitalism removed
unlike earlier socialist feminists
they didn’t believe that this would be automatically achieved by capitalism
rowbotham called for a “revolution within a revoloution”
that required not only restructuring the economic system to eliminate class inequality but also radically transforming social relations and institutions to eradicate gender oppression
Gilman focused on
societal condiitoning subtly coerced girls into becoming mothers and homemakers from a young age through toys and clothing , limited their economic independence from a young age
