post modern feminism , personal is political Flashcards
the personal is political wasn’t a rallying cry for post modern feminists who criticised radical feminists in the second wave feminist movements for
generalsing womens oppression as that of white middle class women
including in the idea of a traditional family and private sphere
they certainly accepted the idea that womens oppression wasn’t just in the public sphere and that feminism should
challenge oppression across society including in the private sphere
this can been seen in their emphasis on a fluid and diverse understanding of gender and what it means to be a woman recognising that
each woman’s situation and identity is different
they rejected the idea that there is a single universal experience of being a woman and argue that
gender is not a rigid binary category but rather a spectrum of identities that intersect with other aspects of a persons social and personal life such as race class sexuality and culture
