What is socialisation?
Process by which we learn norms, values and behaviour appropriate to our society
What is primary socialisation?
Basic human behaviour that is learnt from people around us during infancy.
Examples of primary socialisation?
Gender identity, how to communicate.
Primary agent of socialisation?
Family, informal
What are feral children?
Feral children are abandoned children who become wild and dehumanised.

What is secondary socialisation?
The way behaviour is learned through agents other than the family such as the media, education, workplace etc…
The family?
Primary socialisation - we learn to eat, walk and talk from our parents/caregivers
The media?
Secondary socialisation - we learn social expectations, interests and exposure to other cultures from the media.
Education?
Secondary socialisation - we learn rules set out by our school/college
Peer groups?
Secondary socialisation - we learn emotional intelligence, hobbies/ interests and the concept of peer pressure from peer groups.
Workplace?
Secondary socialisation - we learn value of money, manners, and confidence from the workplace.
Religion?
Secondary socialisation - we learn values and beliefs, attitudes towards certain laws and faith from religion.
Social control?
The process of persuading or forcing individuals to conform to norms and values - this can be informal or formal
Formal agents of social control examples…
Police, government, courts, and military.
