What is culture?
A
As a concept refers to the language, beliefs, values, norms, customs, knowledge and skills which combine to make the way of life in any society

A
Socialisation from one generation to the next

What are spectacular subcultures?
A
- subscribe to norms and values of mainstream society but also have some norms and values that are distinct from the rest of society.
- subcultures in society change overtime, reflecting the changing nature in society
- sometimes develop oppositions to authority
- examples : hippies and emos/goths

What is high culture?
A
- culture of the elite or the upper class
- usually people with good breeding and with appropriate education can only appreciate this culture
- privileged position in society - those who do not cannot access it
- Examples : Ballet, Opera and Travelling

What is popular culture?
A
- the culture of ordinary people
- borrows an idea from high culture + popularises it among the masses
- media plays a big role in creating popular culture
- examples : football, and horse races

What is global culture?
A
- the world has become interconnected socially, politically, and economically - globalisation
- also developed from migration trends in international travel and also world-wide spread media
- examples : technology, sports, and brands.

What is consumer culture
A
- in which the consumption of goods and services is the norm.
- media plays a key role - portrays our identities + economy (disposable income)
- examples of how it’s become more accessible : home delivery and online shopping

What is cultural diversity?
A
- includes a diverse range of groups from different cultural backgrounds living separately in society
- it is possible to have a society that is diverse but still agrees on some norms and values
- Cultural embedded differences
- examples in the UK : London (Chinatown) and Edinburgh

What is Multiculturalism?
A
- different cultures living equally in society
- 8.9% of the UK comes from ethnic minority backgrounds
- acknowledges and welcomes a range of different cultures
- examples : world food aisles and a range of takeaways.
