  • subcultures in society change overtime, reflecting the changing nature in society
  • sometimes develop oppositions to authority
  • examples : hippies and emos/goths

What is high culture?

A
  • culture of the elite or the upper class
  • usually people with good breeding and with appropriate education can only appreciate this culture
  • privileged position in society - those who do not cannot access it
  • Examples : Ballet, Opera and Travelling

  • borrows an idea from high culture + popularises it among the masses
  • media plays a big role in creating popular culture
  • examples : football, and horse races

  • includes a diverse range of groups from different cultural backgrounds living separately in society
  • it is possible to have a society that is diverse but still agrees on some norms and values
