A
- Primary socialisation is the basic human behaviour that is learnt from people around during infancy.
- The family is the only agent of socialisation we learn this from
- Anne Oakley - argues that primary socialisation is a key in developing gender identity through concepts such as canalisation.
- The study of Feral Children highlights the importance of primary socialisation, for example a feral child named Oxana was left to fend for herself and developed the characteristics of a dog.

A
- Secondary socialisation is the way behaviour is learned through agents other than the family such as media, education, workplace, etc…
- This is usually learnt once we enter full time education (4 years old)
- for example Bowles and Gintis who state that we learn qualities such as punctuality and authority in education through the Hidden Curriculum
