Medical model?
Sees disability as a medical problem, focuses on limitations of the impairment. This may lead to ‘victim blaming’, where the issues lies with the disabled and not society failing them.

Disabled people are socialised into a ‘victim mentality’ as they can use it as a reason for their failure.

People can find it awkward talking to a disabled person.
–> less than 1/5 of people are disabled however the other 4/5 are ‘not yet disabled’ - being able-bodied is not guaranteed.

Disabled people construct ‘self-identity’ different to their impairment, accepting.

Changing identity:
Stops discrimination against disabled people. Shows norms are changing, accepting of disabilities.
