What is discrimination?
act of expressing prejudice

What is diversity?

What is ethnicity?
members share unique social and cultural heritage
passed on generation to generation

What is normalization?
treating a stigmatized person as if there is no stigma
What is normification?
attempt by stigmatized person to present as ordinary
Describe oppressed minorities
individuals influenced by issues unique to group membership
Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native American’s with powerful racial, ethnic, and political consciousness
experience racial pride and self

What is prejudice?
bias or judgement based on -value judgement -personal history -inferences about others -applying normative judgements (the way things ought to be)
What is privilege?
advantage/benefit given
unintentionally, unconsciously, and automatically
What is race?
no biological significance
subgrp that possesses distinct characteristics
What is racism?
prejudice, generalizations directed at an individual or group
justifies privilege, aggression, violence
What is social identity?
dominant culture establishes person’s sense of who they are based on their group membership
