  • Reconstruction ended in 1877 when federal troops were removed from the South, this weakened the ability to enforce the rights of African American people.

The 14th Amendment defined citizenship and gave equal protection to all citizens of the US. Congress gave a law to President Andrew Johnson to pass, but he vetoed it, eventually congress overrode his veto anyway.
