Q

What is the 3/5 compromise?

A

During this time slavery was a major problem in their world. In the south the enslaved took up most of the population. Because of this the south wanted the population to count to their representation. But, the southern states didn’t want their slaves to count towards taxes. The northern states disagreed with both arguments. They came to a compromise, each slave was counted as ⅗ of a person and counted as ⅗ towards population and taxes.

A

In 1820 the US had 22 states (11 free, 11 slaves)
This balance gets messed up when Missouri comes and claims it wants to be a slave state.
This caused heated arguments in congress
This biggest issue with Missouri was political power. So congress made the upper part of Main a free state. (making it 12, 12)

Q

What does it actually mean that slaves are
considered property?

A

Slaves were sold to people as if they were objects. People had auctions and sold slaves and acted as if they were property, and forced them to do work against their will. The reason for this behavior is because slaves were black.

Indentured servants usually owed money, or were in debt. They had to sign a contract, and work a certain amount of years. But, after their amount of time, they are free! Q

What was John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry? Did this help divide or unite the country? Explain using evidence?

A

John Brown and his men went to Harpers Ferry and captured the bridges. They wanted to attack the US military and use their weapons to arm slaves. John Brown and his men waited at Harpers Ferry and were ready to die for the abolitionist cause. I think this divided the nation. I think this because this caused an attack and made the pro-slavery people mad.
