Who were the Federalists? What did they want?
John Adams, Thomas Pinckney, Alexander Hamilton.
They wanted a strong central government, non-strict constitution, alliance with England.
Who were the Republicans? What did they want?
Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Aaron Burr.
They wanted a weak central government, and more states rights. Strict constitution, alliance with France.

Who were the candidates, and their parties and supporters?
REPUBLICANS: Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr - supported by the south and west
FEDERALISTS: John Adams and Thomas Pinckney - supported by north

What was the problem and outcome of this election?
John Adams won, but because of the rules back then, Thomas Jefferson won Vice President. They were two different parties.
What was the Alien Act?
It allowed the president to imprison and depart immigrants. Also took longer to become a citizen.
What was the purpose of the Alien Act?
To make it easier for Adams to win presidency. Because immigrant typically voted Republican.
What was the Federalist and Republican view on the Alien Acts?
FEDERALISTS: were in favor and believed it was to protect from troublemakers.
REPUBLICANS: were against it because they thought it was an attack on their party.
What was the Sedition Act?
To punish those who lied to destroy the government.
What was the Federalist and Republican view on the Sedition Acts?
FEDERALISTS: were in favor because they didn’t lie about the government.
REPUBLICANS: were against it because they thought it went against their rights.
What was the XYZ affair? Why was it called that?
The French started to seize American ships. So, Adams sent people to negotiate with agents known as XYZ. It was called this because the agents from France wanted to be known as XYZ.
How did Adams handle the XYZ affair?
Adam sent three men Jerry, Pinkney and Marshall to go and discuss what can be done.
What was the outcome of the XYZ affair?
Adams wanted to go to war, but ended up not. Instead France demanded a sum of money and then they settled.
In the election of 1800, who were the candidates?
John Adams and his running mate Charles Pinckney were the two Federalists. Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr the two Republicans.
What was the outcome of the election of 1800?
After multiple votes, Thomas Jefferson became president, and Aaron Burr became the vice president.
Why was the an unusual election?
Because the two Republicans tied, so the Federalists didn’t know who to vote for.
