What is an “absolute location”?
An exact location on earth’s surface.
(The coordinates of longitude and latitude 40.7598°N, 74.4171°W of Madison NJ)
What is a “relative location”?
The location is related to another location.
(MJS is about a half mile east of McCools)
What are unique characteristics in a “place”?
Weather, plants, animals, history and people that live there.
What is “Human Environment Interaction”?
Humans interact with the social system and human system
Examples:
Humans impact Earth by: Polluting gasses, building houses and building, and growing crops and food
Environment impacts us by:
Weather (If its cold we wear lots of layers, and if it’s hot we wear less layers)
What is “Movement”?
The world is constantly changing with movement
Examples:
Resources: Goods; food and clothes are always being transported
Ideas: Plans are always being passed to different people by voice and through technology
People: People are always walking around, picking up and moving to a new location, and driving their cars around
What is “Region”?
Unifying characteristics
Examples: desserts, countries, cities, lakes and oceans are examples of regions
What is climate?
Climate is the weather patterns an area experiences over a long period of time.
What is weather?
Weather is the conditions during a short period of time.
What are the 3 Factors that impact a location’s climate?
Latitude (The distance north/south of the Equator), Altitude (High altitude = generally colder climates even in the tropics.)
Ocean Currents (Temps near the coast are kept more mild by the ocean currents offshore)
What are the 2 factors that control where and how humans settle?
Climate (People settle in climates that make it easy to survive (not too cold or dry)
Natural Resources (People settle in areas with lots of natural resources like water and food and stone and wood because they can be used to survive and make life easier)
Define renewable resources + an example
Resources that can be replaced at the same rate they are used. (plants)
Define nonrenewable resources + an example
Resources that can only be used once. (oil)
What does DOGSTAIL stand for?
Date, Orientation, Grid, Scale, Title, Author, Index, and Legend
What is a political map?
They show political boundaries such as countries, states, counties and cities.
What is a physical map?
They show landforms and bodies of water like continents, mountains, plains, deserts, oceans, seas and rivers.
