- The impact of an established behaviour of the group ‘group norms’ that you are likely to conform to

- We usually follow group norms to avoid being ridiculed by friends/family

SOCIAL INFLUENCE
A
- Is the process by which attitude, perception and behaviour can be influenced by the real or implied presence (KASSIM ET AL 2002)
- May involve COMPLIANCE; were one publicly acts according to perceived norms whilst privately disagreeing with such norms

TYPES OF CONFORMITY (ASHE)
A
- PUBLIC CONFORMITY; only in the presence of conformity
- PRIVATE CONFORMITY; a behaviour that you would display even if people weren’t watching ie. animal cruelty

- Conformity increases with group size up to 4 persons then levels off

- Conformity increases when the ‘norm’ is activated or brought to the persons attention

A
- The presence of a single confederate who disagrees with the majority reduces conformity

- COLLECTIVIST CULTURES; eastern societies with high levels of unamity and conformity
- INDIVIDUAL CULTURES; western conform LESS to norms

SHREIF (1935)
A
- Experiment showed participants of single pinpoint of a light in a dark romo
- Participants were asked to estimate individually how far the light moved from its original position
- After initial attempt, participants worked in pairs to reach census
- Establishing agreed point

CRITICISM (ASHE)

- Group consisted of 3
- Therefore participants may have not considered it to be a group
- No right/wrong answer; ambitious
- Sherif told them he was going to move the light, so they were likely to change their minds anyway
