- used auto kinetic effect,
- subjects asked to judge how fara light moved to see how judgement changed with other people in the room
- first judgement was alone, later in group

a group norm was developed, gave answers close to group norm rather than individual answers.

- people use other peoples judgements for validation in being correct, (social influence)
- people unaware of being influenced
