Social Learning theory Flashcards
what does social learning theory state?
learn through imitation/observation of role moels
what is vicarious reinforcement?
occurs when role models are seen to be gaining the reward desired by the young person
what is self-reinforcement?
learned behaviour may make individual feel proud or good internally
what’s motivation?
-we are motivated to repeat these behaviours by the actual or perceived reward they bring
what is identification?
role models will be people like them in some way-people they admire and look up to or of the same gender
what is a feature of social learning theory?
paying attention
SUPPORTING
Bandura(1961/63)-shows that children do copy aggression-same sex models
+less reductionist-includes cognition
CONFLICTING
- Bandura-loads of kids didn’t copy behaviour
- CHarlton-St Helena Island-exposed to tv and din’t have an impact(family may have provided better role models)
- deterministic
OTHER EVIDENCE
-operant conditioning
classical conditioning
-biological-hormone imbalance
USEFULNESS
-useful for intro of age restrictions and watershed
TESTABILITY
+empirical-measures behaviour directly
