Bandura 1961 Flashcards
what was the aim?
- aimed to investigate the mechanism of SLT to see whether things learned in 1 context would be repeated in different ones
- to see if children are more likely to imitate same sex models
what was the sample/ppts?
72 ppts from same nursery
split into 2 group-male and female
what was the procedure?
1-1 group saw non-aggressive model playing with toys/experimental group watched adult hit/kick/punch bob doll
2-all group taken into other room and started playing with toys-old toys weren’t for them
4-taken into another room with bob dolls as well as other aggressive toys
5-children watched through 1 way mirror-behaviour recorded-noting down very 5secs for 20mins
what was the results/conclusions?
- boys imitated more physical aggression than girls
- boys copied 25.8 aggressive acts when the model was male
- little difference in verbal aggression between boys and girls
GENERALISABILITY
+large sample (72)-more representative
+sample contains both boys and girls
-only 3-5yrs old so not representative to larger population-older age
RELIABILITY
+standardised removes extraneous variables-reliable
+standardised setting/steps/timings
+standardised coding scheme-for behaviours-more replicable
+inter-rater reliability-more than 1 observer
APPLICABLE
+explain why watershed is a thing
+explain the dangers of aggressive behaviour in front of children
-doesn’t take into account biological issues
VALIDITY
+ecological validity-nursery setting
-also done in ab setting-ecological validity-could also alter behavioural factors-strange place for children
ETHICS
- no informed consent from ppts-but adults gave consent
- no withdrawal
- possible harm-became aggressive
what things were researchers watching for?
imitative aggression,non-imitative aggression
how long were researchers recording observations
every 5 seconds for 20 minutes
what design measure was used?
matched pairs design
