Bandura 1965 Flashcards
what was the aim?
wanted to see if vicarious reinforcement had effect on children’s behaviour
what was the sample/ppts?
33 males and 33 females
from stanford uni-
what was the procedure?
1-model rewarded for aggressive behaviour
2-model punished for aggressive behaviour
3-consequences (no control)
-children told they wee to ‘surprise playroom’ but had to wait-watched tv
what was the results?
- Model Reward condition- same imitation from girls and boys-no consequences condition
- younger children copied physical aggression more than verbal aggression
- Model Punished condition-less imitation especially among girls
what was the conclusion?
- less imitation when punishment has been observed
- girls are more restraint from threat of punishment
- when offered incentives-children who watched model being punished showed that they had learned behaviours
GENERALISABILITY
+large sample
+male and female ppts
-ethnocentric-stanford university
RELIABILITY
+standardised procedure-used in all 3 experiments
APPLICABILITY
+showed how children learn aggression
-targeted age group-may not apply to older wider population
VALIDITY
+use of different models and lack of reinforcement-more internally valid
-extraneous variables-don’t know what some children’s backgrounds were-aggressive families
ETHICS
- consent given from carers-not children
- protection from harm-children may become more aggressive now
what was the model rewarded condition?
second adult comes in with drink and sweets-aggressive behaviour deserved ‘considerable treats’-other adult came and made positive comments
what was the model punishment condition?
- adult came in shaking his finger and calling him a bully-‘you quit picking on that clown,I won’t tolerate it’
- second adult comes in hitting person with newspaper
what were the controls?
no reinforcements
how long were the children observed?
10 mins
recorded every 5 secs
how many observers were there?
2
