Social learning theory Flashcards
1
Q
What is social learning theory?
A
- it emphasises the role of observation and imitation of role models during learning
- The individual learns by observing a role model and then imitates the modelled behaviour
2
Q
What do social learning theorists believe?
A
that behaviour is learned
3
Q
4 basic processes that social learning involves?
A
- Observation
- Modelling
- Imitation
- Reinforcement
4
Q
What is observation?
A
Simply watching the behaviour of others
5
Q
What is Modelling?
A
Specific behaviour performed by someone of relevance
6
Q
What is imitation?
A
Direct copying of the behaviour of the model
7
Q
What is reinforcement?
A
- Could be direct such as a positive consequence for imitating a model
- Could be indirect such as seeing the model be reinforced for their behaviour
8
Q
What is vicarious reinforcement?
A
Indirect reinforcement by seeing the model being positively reinforced for their behaviour
9
Q
2 things to remember?
A
- Social learning can occur without any reinforcement
- We are more likely to imitate a person who is reinforced for their behaviour (Vicarious reinforcement)
10
Q
Who was it developed by?
A
Bandura
11
Q
What did Bandura argue?
A
- That children are more likely to imitate role models if they are the same sex, similar and nurturing.
- Also that more powerful role models are more readily imitated along with adults who are seen to be rewarded for their behaviour (Vicarious reinforcement)
