Practical Flashcards
What was our research question?
Do more males drive big cars than women?
Aim?
To investigate whether more males than females could be seen driving bigger cars over a given period of time
Alternate hypothesis?
Significantly more males would be seen driving big cars than females over a given amount of time
Ethics?
- Was an observation in a public place so consent was not required as the P’s were in a place they would expect to be observed by others.
- Wasn’t necessary to debrief P’s as their behavior was not affected
- To ensure confidentiality no names were collected
Procedure?
- We observed from a bench on the side of the road where we could observe the sex of each driver and their car as they drove past us.
- The procedure was carried out on a Wednesday lunchtime and we observed as many people who drove past us in 10 minutes
- we ensured we were not in huge groups so that we could stay discreet and not be noticed to be carrying out an observation
What technique did we use?
Covert non participant observation
Data collection?
-A tally chart was completed to show what sex in what size of car of each car that drove past
What type of data did we collect?
Nominal ( Categories)
What design did we use?
Independent measures
What method was used to test out hypothesis?
Chi squared
What was our critical/table value?
3.84
What was out calculated/observed value?
4.5
Why can we reject the null hypothesis?
Because our observed/Calculated value is higher than our critical/Table value
why did we use Chi squared?
because the data was nominal
