Inferential statistics Flashcards
What do they allow us to do?
Make conclusions related to our hypothesis
- Inference of out data
- Decide which hypothesis makes the best explanation for our results
What do hypothesis do?
Predict that the results are do to the manipulation of the IV
What does a inferential statistical test do?
- Asses the probability that our results are due to chance
- tell us whether the difference is significant or simply just chance
What would A level psychologists accept the null?
-Accept the null unless there is a 5% probability or less of the results being due to chance
How is 5% probability expressed?
p
if the null can be rejected what can we be sure about our results?
95% confident of our conclusions
What is nominal data?
Separate categories such as number of runners finishing a marathon and numbers that didn’t
What is ordinal data?
Ordered data such as what order they finished the marathon 1st 2nd 3rd etc
What is interval data?
using public units of measurement such as the time in which runners finished the marathon and differences in time can then be compared
What statistical test would we use for Nominal data?
Chi Squared
What is chi squared?
When its calculated it produces an observed value and if this is larger than the critical value taken from the table, The results are said to be 5% significant
