Social Learning Theory Flashcards
What is observation
Looking at someone and proscessing their behaviour
What is identification
looking up to someone and adopting their behaviour
What is vicarious reinforcement
learning behaviours by watching a behaviour being punished or rewarded
What is social learning theory
behaviour is learnt from the environment so therefore disregards genetics , behaviour is also learnt from observing others and the reinforcement and punishment of others
What are the 4 mediational proscesses
-attention, what made you pay attention
-retention, remembering the behaviour
-motor reproduction, doing the behaviour
-motivation, remembering reward for certain behaviour
What was the bandura bobo doll study
it was suported by bandura
- 36 boys and 36 girls aged between 3-6
–the adults were being aggresive towards the bobo doll (attention)
–the children saw this behavioir and imitated it because the adults are role models to them (retention)
–so the children repeated the behaviour onto the bobo doll (motor reproduction)
–exposure to the agression made the chidren want to be agressive
Small evaluation of the bobo doll study
the study is potentially not valid, this is because the purpose of the bobo doll is to hit it and therefore thekids may not have learnt from the adults to hit the doll, but already know that the doll is supposed to be hit.
Positives of slt
Acknowledges the role of human cognition as this approach understands that human cognition descision making more complex than animals as it recognises the role of mediational proscesses in human. Thererfore slt may be a better explanation for human behaviour compared to the behaviourist approach
Negatives of slt
Banduras bobo doll study ignores biological differences between boys and girls , as slt suggests that people learn from experience and ignores biological factors. Bandura disregarded that fact that boy exhibited more agressive behaviour which can be due to their higher testosterone levels .so slt may niot account for biological differences between sexes.
