Comparison Of Approaches: Cognitive Flashcards
Nature/nurture
Both
Recognises the interaction be innate biological proscesses like the internal mental proscesses, and nurture, the influence of environmental factors like the development of schemas
Reductionist/ holistic
Reductionist because it simplifies complex human behaviour into smaller more manageable components. Particularly focusing on mental processes such as memory attention and perception and ignoring other influencing factors like emotion. The extensive use of schemas is also reductionist because it simplifies complex scenarios into frameworks of knowledge to help process information efficiently
Deterministic/ free will
Deterministic because it suggests that behaviour and mental proscesses are largely shaped by internal cognitive proscesses such as perception, memory and attentiom, with little emphasis on free will or personal choice in how individuals proscess info
The info procession model compares the human mind to a computer and suggests that human behaviour is determined by how information is processes, implying that human cognitive functions are predictable and follow patterns
Treatment of abnormal behaviour
Uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) which is based on the idea that abnormal behaviour is a result of faulty or distorted ythinking patterns, so focuses on identifying and changing these maladaptive thought patterns to improve mental health
Works by identifying and challenging negative though patterns and replacing them with realistic and balanced thoughts
Treats anxiety, depression and phobias
Schemas: which help interpret and organise info so ur less overwhelmed in new situations, reducing anxiety levels
